This crossbow is probably the best option in the early game for a player to kite infantry mobs, as it has a higher damage than the Hunting Crossbow and can still be used while mounted.
To protect your archer units when you don't have solid infantry and cavalry, ride a counter-clockwise circle around the enemy infantry. They will start trying to run you down and, instead of getting within striking distance with a melee weapon, you can pepper them (slowly) with crossbow bolts.
If using a crossbow on horseback appeals to you, you will eventually want to try and secure a Maiden Crossbow, as it is both far faster and more damaging.
